“OPPOSE”

As a class, we’re putting together a book of design spreads with theme of “opposite.” Here’s my proposed cover design:

It’s definitely just a start, and I need some feedback! Please click on the thumbnail to get the full effect.

    Hey Kim,

    Just some thoughts –

Consider: “Opposite” is relative and dichotomous. Emphasize polarity. Black/white, positive/negative, large/small. The halftone and transition lines within the type create a mesh-like graying effect. I think that your choice to convey harmony is a good place to start, but be careful to also represent antagonizing scale – so as not to diminish the opposition.

    Is that useful?

Yeah, that definitely helps, especially your point about representing the antagonizing scale. The idea was to create an optical conflict between reading the white and black type, but from what it sounds, I need more overall contrast.

Thanks for the observations! And feel free to let me know if I’m misinterpreting you at all.

Definitely continue with the optical conflict. I think that you will get a stronger effect if the elements are very bold. Maybe create the contour a boldly-reduced typeface by allowing the definition of the individual letters to emerge through alternating black/white elements?
